As we all know, incumbent Nancy Boyda is in a pretty tough race against Kansas state “tray-zher” Lynn Jenkins in the second district. Nancy made what is, in hindsight, a pretty big PR blunder by leaving a hearing last year, and Lynn is not letting her forget about it (play the first video — we’re having problems embedding it). So you’d think that Nancy sort of needs all the help she can get right? And that would probably include welcoming the assistance of the DCCC. After all, the kind folks over at the NRCC are flooding the area with hateful vitriol helpful information. Well, you’d be wrong. Because the apparently very proud Nancy has no need for your filthy Washington money. She’ll lose this race just fine by herself!
Nancy wrote an open letter in a venue she could be certain would reach a tremendous number of voters: the Topeka Capital-Journal. To wit:
Unfortunately, in the months since then, numerous Washington groups have disregarded this request. Freedom’s Watch, the Credit Union Legislative Action Council, the National Republican Congressional Committee, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee have all reserved ad time in Kansas.
My sincere hope remains that all of these groups, on both sides of the aisle, will take their ads off the air. In particular, if anyone who is running ads in my support is reading this letter, here’s my message to you: “Thanks, but no thanks.” Please stay out of my race.
Yikes. A tad petulant, no? We’ll admit we’re not huge fans of Nancy; in the summer of 2007, when your editor went to see her at an event at the Lawrence Public Library, someone asked her a question about the war and she asked all the TV crews in attendance to turn off their cameras. Not exactly in step with the goals of transparent democracy.
But hey! Nancy doesn’t need your democracy or your helpful campaign tactics. And when she wakes up Nov. 5th to find Lynn Jenkins victorious, well, at least she’ll have her pride. Maybe?
