And so we enter day four of the delightful brouhaha surrounding JoCo commissioner John Toplikar’s odd decision to steal his opponent’s campaign signs — or, as he insists, move his opponent’s campaign signs. Toplikar, staging an “impromptu” news conference in scenic downtown Olathe, insisted that he was merely trying to assist his genial opponent by moving them to a location where they would not be blocked. That location? His van, apparently. And at whose feet does Toplikar lay the blame for this entire hubbub? Wny, the elitist liberal media, of course!
Remember when you were a kid and you’d try to lie your way out of something by adding layer upon layer of fabrication? Um, that was nothing:
He said he was merely trying to help Hayden when he pulled up the signs across the street from the county election office just after 1 p.m. Saturday.
A minivan drove up, Toplikar said, that he assumed held Hayden and his wife. “They were watching me and I was watching them,” he said.
So Toplikar then pulled up his opponent’s signs and placed them in his van to drive to another location where the minivan had driven.
Toplikar said his reasoning was that “this would be a great time to have a confrontation with Calvin and we could talk about this man to man.”
But the minivan pulled off, and the only confrontation was with police.
“This is childish games with political signs,” Toplikar said. He blamed journalists for stoking the “media circus.”
“Mr. Hayden has done an excellent job of getting the media to feed right in to his hands,” Toplikar said.
Huh? So… the best way to improve the sight lines of your opponent’s signs is to uproot them, load them into a Chevy half-ton, and personally deliver them to the final location of another minivan you assume is being driven by your opponent? Okay then.
And really, John? Blaming the media? For focusing on this bizarre story a week before Election Day? You really have to be someone like Sarah Palin to get away with that kind of totally illogical claim. You, sir, are no Sarah Palin.
