In case you didn’t notice, this week saw the election of a new president — news that was greeted with widespread happiness and definitely not any tears around the SOTL living rooms offices — and that means some new federal policies toward gun ownership. After all, President-elect Obama spoke with genuine passion about the nation agreeing that assault rifles and automatic weapons don’t belong in our nation’s homes. But do you think that’s going to stop the Mensa members who comprise the Kansas gun enthusiast set? No way: firearm aficionados in the Sunflower State have long foreseen this day, and they responded to Obama’s surge in the polls with a surge in gun purchases. No, seriously.
Out of good ol’ Hutchinson KS (wherever that is) comes some interesting news about a sector of the economy that’s doing well — if for all the wrong reasons.
Some Kansas gun dealers said Democrat Barack Obama’s election to the presidency has sparked an increase in firearms sales.
Retailers said sales have risen as much as 15 percent in the past month, as most polls showed Obama leading Republican John McCain. South Hutchinson gun shop manager Roger Theede said Obama has fueled fears of new restrictions on firearms, and that his sales have risen lately. Theede said on the day after the election, “I’ve had people this morning asking, ‘Have you sold out of guns yet?”‘
Perhaps the scariest part of the article?
McPherson gun dealer Chuck Harter said that firearm distributors he called Wednesday said they had run out of assault rifles.
Wow. We knew that some people were afraid of an Obama presidency, but isn’t this taking it a little far? Aren’t you believing the wingnut NRA literature a bit too deeply if you really believe that a president will deploy an army of starry-eyed idealists to confiscate your AKs and Glocks?
